Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has one of the most concentrated populations of black bears. It’s a quick 30 minute drive from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, located in the Outerbanks. Bears can be safely viewed from your car. There are gravel roads that wind in and out around farmland and woods. A nightly drive through the refuge can often result in a dozen sightings. The first year I discovered Alligator River NWR was one of the most exciting times I have had there. The bears then didnt seem quite as skittish and would hang out for great lengths of time. There was one young bear that seemed to enjoy me taking his picture. He appeared out of the woods and walked across a fallen tree. He would sit. Stand. Yawn. Stare. I clicked away. After feeling like I got some good pictures I drove on up the road, noticing in my rear view mirror that he disappeared back into the woods. Later I drove back down that same gravel road and slowed when I neared the fallen tree over the creek where I had seen him earlier. He wasnt there. After pausing a few minutes, out he popped from the woods and scooted back onto the fallen tree and resumed his posing. It was so much fun. I photographed him til dark. Another night that week I spotted a bear ambling up the road. I slowed and he crossed the road and disappeared into the tall grass. I could hear him scurrying into the water. I pulled up and over and set my camera on the roof of my car so I could photograph him from the far side of my car. I felt safe with the car between me and him. He seemed oblivious to me anyway. I watched and photographed while he swam in the water and pulled bark off a tree trunk laying in the water. He would use his teeth to pull off the bark and go flying backwards when he got it off! hilarious! I also watched him wash his face. Unfortunately, I was using a camera then that had to be manually focused. It was nearing dusk and my settings werent great. My shots were less than adequate. But I have those memories captured in my mind forever!
