My trip to Canada was an amazing experience for me! It was the first time I had traveled alone and the first time to travel as an adult outside the US. I photographed snowy owls with about 8 other people. It was so exciting to see my first snowy owls! For the past several years I had been getting email alerts from ebird.org for snowy owl sightings in the US. I had thought if there was one that was staying in an area for several days and if it was an easy flight, I’d go so I could photograph one. It just never worked out that a snowy was sighted repeatedly over several days and oftentimes it was on private property. The trip to Canada provided a way for me to observe, photograph, and learn about snowy owls. They are magnificent!

...and Trumpeter Swans!
The day we went to photograph the trumpeter swans was a great day in terms of seeing a species for the first time but not a great day weather wise. It was difficult for me to get my exposure settings correct. It was windy, overcast, and spitting sleet/snow. There were dozens of trumpeter swans at the place where we went. These birds stretch out up to 6 feet in length and can weigh over 25 pounds! They make the awesome sound of a trumpet. So neat to hear! When they take off they slap the surface of the water with their wings and feet. They run to get their momentum up I suppose before take off. This was one of the most thrilling things to watch and hear! I watched as a group of them would run across the shore line of the lake, flapping their wings and their big feet pounding the water and ground before taking flight. It was quite noisy. Unfortunately, I was unable to get sharp pictures of their take off. All of those shots are not sharp enough for me to post. But I did get this one awesome shot above of a trumpeter swan I captured on the snowy lake and surrounded by snow. Lots of snow!
