Salt River Wild Horses
Mesa, Arizona
According to the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, "The Salt River wild horses are a historic population of unbranded, unclaimed, wild and free-roaming horses that were born in the wild and are now protected by State Law within our national forest.
Evidence indicates that wild horses have been living on the lower Salt River since well before the Tonto National Forest was created in 1902. It is believed that the herd is descended from the Spanish horses brought to Arizona by Spanish missionary Father Eusebio Kino in the 1600’s. The herd is iconic, representative of nature at its best: wild and free. It is also accessible — tourists and photographers come from all over the nation to see these wild horses."
The Salt River wild horses did not disappoint! Every day produced sightings, sometimes in the Salt River, sometimes in front of a mountain range among the desert vegetation.
The horses go to the river not just for water or a refreshing dip but for nourishment too! While in the water the horses can be observed eating the fresh water Eelgrass that grows on the river bottom. By eating the eelgrass, the horses keep it under control as in abundance it can become a problem in the summer months when it clogs the river. The wild horses are the only species reducing the river eelgrass, in doing so they keep the river from becoming stagnant.
Sometimes they could be observed sinking their entire faces beneath the water line of the river to pull long spaghetti like strands of the grass and chomping contentedly on it.
The colt in the image below is "clacking" to his daddy. I had never witnessed this before and didn't know such a term existed. What I learned was a colt will clack his teeth together to convey to the stallion, "I'm just a baby, please don't hurt me."
So much of good photography is being in the right place at the right time! We got lucky to be in the right place at the right time when we got to be a witness to several herds converging. This spiked a bit of territorial activity between the stallions and we got to photograph horses running, sparring, and baring teeth. However, my images didn't turn out as good as I had hoped so I don't have any good ones to show you. I guess that just means a return trip is in order to try again!

I say to you, I definitely get annoyed even as other folks think
about issues that they just do not understand about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as smartly as outlined out the whole thing without having side-effects
, other folks could take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thanks
