Owl Prowl

Owls are a fascination of mine. Their unique looks are not only captivating in a spooky kind of way, they are very photogenic! Above is a barred owl photographed at Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland, Florida. In general, owls are easy to photograph because they sit still like a statue for long periods of time. One of my favorite places to photograph owls is Cape Coral, Florida. Here you will find dozens of burrowing owls. Part of the fun is finding them. I drive up and down streets of neighborhoods, loking for the wooden crosses, which are placed at the burrow of each owl family. More often than not, I look carefully in the vicinity of the wooden cross and find nothing. But every now and then, a pair of golden eyes pop out of the burrow and blink stupidly at me. Sometimes, I’ll find an owl soaking in the sun, standing guard right outside his burrow. When I spot one I feel like a kid on an easter egg hunt who has just snagged the prize egg! It’s always fun and surprising entertainment!
